PCR tests are used to directly detect the presence of an antigen, rather than the presence of the body’s immune response, or antibodies. By detecting viral RNA, which will be present in the body before antibodies form or symptoms of the disease.
ANTIGEN tests are immunoassays that detect the presence of a specific viral antigen, which implies current viral infection. Antigen tests are relatively inexpensive, and most can be used at the point of care. Most of the currently authorized tests return results in approximately 15 minutes.
RAPID ANTIBODY tests look for antibodies that are made by your immune system in response to a threat, such as a specific virus. Antibodies can take several days or weeks to develop after you have an infection and may stay in your blood for several weeks or more after recovery. The presence of antibodies may indicate a previous COVID-19 infection.
